    Power of Song

    Friday, February 8, 2008, 12:59 PM [General]

For thousands of years, learning was done through song. From the
history of the clan to how to worship the Gods/Goddesses, from the use
of plants for medicine to the navigation of aboriginal clans through
their year long trek, song is used to aid in learning. Many cultures
developed specialized professions, such as the Bard in Druidism. They
would train for ten to fifteen years, learning stories and poetry to
both enlighten and entertain, and were held in high esteem.

Today teaching through song is, in some ways, making a comeback. Who
doesn't remember "School House Rock?" "I'm Just a Bill" and
"Conjunction Junction" still go through my head occasionally, and are
quite handy! Most teaching songs are aimed at children, but this
method of learning and retaining knowledge is very valid in adults.
Another, although unlikely, favorite tutorial of mine is the "Galaxy
Song" from Monty Python's movie "the Meaning of Life:"

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.

We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

This one helped me get through Astronomy 1 class a few years back.

Why is it that song lyrics stay with us years after we've heard them?
Does the rhythm and beat communicate with our deeper psyche? Is this
why songs and poetry can move us so? Rhythmic drumming and chanting
has been used as a method of meditation and spiritual connection since
the beginning of time. Perhaps this ancient learning method should be
brought back in full force, to preserve our knowledge to be passed
along to further generations. If knowledge is power, then the passing
along of knowledge empowers all, without lessening anyone's status.
Here is a quick lesson from the past: throughout history those in
power sought to keep the lower classes from being taught anything but
the most basic skills. To be able to read was judged to be the realm
of the church or others in power. Why? Because that takes away
dissent. People had to accept what was being told to them, as they had
no way to prove otherwise. Ignorance turns humans into slaves, but
even the slaves of the American south used songs to communicate how to
    escape to a new life.

    Knowing Independently

    Wednesday, February 6, 2008, 08:33 AM [General]

Think only about what you WANT.During this month of Aquarius we seek TO KNOW, and during this 10-day period we find ourselves influenced to find ways to become Independent with our Knowing... to follow our own Path to knowledge through seeking the answers to our own questions.

I often think that our questions are more important than the answers we find.  When we have a question about ourselves and/or our world we open ourselves for the Universe to provide an answer.  When we learn to question everything... especially our own understanding... then we are always open for new instruction.

It would seem that it is true, then, as Nancy Willard says: "Sometimes questions are more important than answers."

What’s been on your mind recently?  Do you have a question you’re wondering about?

Even though I try to continually look for questions and their answers, there are times when I've run out of questions and seem to stop asking for more because I'm comfortable with where I'm at.   When things get too comfortable, however, something always happens to shake up my world and get me thinking again.

My teacher, Father Eli, used to say…
    “No problems… no thinking
    No thinking… no questions
    No questions… no answers”

Every problem that arises brings with it contrast.  A contrasting situation brings about a dual awareness both of what we DON’T WANT and of what we DO WANT.

When your focus is upon the problem, you feel bad.  When your focus is upon the solution, you feel good.

When Source Energy flows through us, we feel good.  When we’ve pinched it off – even just a little – we feel bad.

If we pay attention to how we feel – and care about feeling good – then we can always tell whether we’re allowing Source Energy to flow through us or not.

“Any moment of tension or unhappiness is caused by some emotional pattern that needs to be examined if we are to reach perfection.”
    ~ Father Eli (1916-1983)

We are taught, in the Druidic Craft, that we are born into this life with a certain set of weaknesses to overcome and a certain set of strengths to acquire, and the events in our lives are such to teach us about these qualities within ourselves.

By thinking about and meditating on the daily influence of Father Sun’s journey through the constellations we are thereby able to see his influence in our own daily life. From this contemplation we can learn how to wisely improve our own character, and thereby increase our magical abilities.

Through the natural Law of Cause and Effect we learn either to repeat rewarded thoughts and actions, or to avoid further punishment by making other choices.  Like good parents, the Creators teach us by this means to grow into Their likeness until we achieve our destiny of becoming magical creators in our own right.

The most likely reason for existence is that we are growing into this perfection.

Do you care about improving your character?
Do you think about how you might become more loving?

If your prayers or magical work is powered by LOVE,
do you think it would improve your abilities if you did?

    It’s worth thinking about…

    WHERE'S YOUR ATTENTION?

"Only one thing has to change for us to know happiness in our lives: where we focus our attention."
    ~ Greg Anderson

What do you usually focus on: problems or solutions?

When our mind dwells on a problem, we stay stuck.  Woe is me!  But when we can shift to ask how we might achieve a solution to our problem, our subconscious mind, thinking and creativity move into gear. New possibilities open up.

Get in the habit of asking for solutions!

"Every choice moves us closer to or farther away from something. Where are your choices taking your life? What do your behaviors demonstrate that you are saying yes or no to in life?"

    nobody knows

    Monday, November 19, 2007, 08:42 AM [General]

Hello everyone! Most of you are new friends so let me tell you a little about myself... That I'm 37, a lesbian, and live in central Arkansas you can pick up from my profile... The wiccan bit is not quite correct... I'm a druid Ovate (if ya wanna know, ask). I work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as a Pre-Award Specialist... I would describe the job but your spleen would pass out from bordom. I live with two girlfriends in a three bedroom house, drive a Jeep Liberty, and am about as real a person as you are likely to find.

I don't use drugs ('cept prescriptions), don't drink, and am quitting smoking. I believe that rapists and pediphiles should be hung in public, I don't personally believe in abortion but I strongly support a person's right to choose for themself, and that nobody NOBODY who wants to be in a political office should be allowed to!!!

It is quite a feeling to be able to reduce most people to stuttering uncomfortable masses by telling them about myself... I had an add request Friday from a woman in Maine... we emailed and IMed all day and a good part of the evening, and found that we had soooo much in common that I trusted her with that bit of information that I usually keep to myself. What follows is her response on IM:

"****************** (11/16/2007 8:31:15 PM): OH I DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:33:15 PM): can you understand why it takes a great deal of trust
    ****************** (11/16/2007 8:33:36 PM): YES I CAN I WOULD NEVER TELL ANYONE
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:34:32 PM): but, if I met someone I really liked and I didn't tell them, when they finally found out they would feel betrayed
****************** (11/16/2007 8:34:58 PM): YES I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:35:43 PM): what do you think
****************** (11/16/2007 8:36:40 PM): I REALLY DONT KNOW YET ITS A REALLY BIG SHOCK TOO ME
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:37:33 PM): yes, it tends to be
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:38:29 PM): and almost every time the person I have shared this with has politely or impolitely excused themself never to be heard from again
****************** (11/16/2007 8:38:31 PM): YA SORRY BUT I JUST NEED TIME TO THINK
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:38:41 PM): thats alright
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:39:32 PM): would you like me to let you go for now?
****************** (11/16/2007 8:40:40 PM): YA I NEED TO THINK ABOUT THIS OK I WILL LET YOU KNOW TOMORROW
Kaitlyn Simpson (11/16/2007 8:41:07 PM): alright, have a wonderful evening regardless
    ****************** (11/16/2007 8:41:22 PM): YOU TOO"

That was the last I heard from her until today, when she deleted me from her friends list and made her page private. I'm not a freak, I'm not a perv, I'm not a criminal... I'm just me... a woman with a birth defect.

Of course it is a much better feeling to run across the rare ones (Thanks Ron!!) to whom this is just another thing. People like her are what keeps me going and what keeps me from turning bitter.

If only i could meet that one woman who would love me for who I am, and want me in her life...

The center point of your SOR is your Mean Sexual Orientation.

    Thursday, November 1, 2007, 04:06 PM [General]

Warning! I don't give a fuck if you don't like the way I live! I am who I am, and if you don't like it that's not my problem, now is it? I live my the best I can, but I'm not going to answer to anyone else for being who I am. If you want to take the time to get to know me, I am more than happy to have you as a friend. I've had far too many people lately , when I share one aspect of my self, drop me like a hot potato. Fuck them! Its their loss!!

Now that I'm done with my rant... if you haven't already guessed, I'm Lez, a Druid Ovate, a caring friend and a loving partner (when I have the chance.) If you would like to know me, know about me, or just say "Hi", please do so! I love meeting new friends and interesting people, so if you are one, I am too.
